Compounding

In pharmacy, “compounding” refers to the science of preparing personalized medications for patients. Compounded medications are made from scratch – individual ingredients are mixed together per the prescriber’s specifications to meet the patient’s specific needs.

Up until the 1950’s, nearly all prescriptions were compounded.  In the middle of the 20th century, pharmaceutical companies started the concept of mass manufacturing and pharmacists soon followed form by dispensing pre-manufactured medications with pre-determined dosages.  As a result, compounding rapidly declined and most pharmacists were no longer trained to compound medications.

Over the past decade, there has been a resurgence for compounding because the “one size fits all” nature of pre-manufactured pharmaceuticals is not meeting the unique needs and specific concerns of many patients.

Pharmaceutical compounding is a branch of pharmacy that plays the crucial role of drug development. Compounding pharmacists and medicinal chemists develop and test combinations of  materials to develop alternative pharmaceutical formulationsThese formulations contain active ingredients that are effective, stable, easy to use and acceptable to patients.
